Manchester United failed in a summer bid to sign Juventus striker Mario Mandzukic, per Calciomercato.
Jose Mourinho was ready to offer the Croatia international a salary of €5 million-per-season, but Massimiliano Allegri persuaded the 32-year-old to remain in Turin.

Manchester United have now gone four games without a win in all competitions following Tuesday's 0-0 Champions League draw with Valencia at Old Trafford. Fresh from a humbling week in which they exited the EFL Cup to Derby County and lost 3-1 to West Ham in the Premier League, Jose Mourinho's side produced another lifeless display in their second continental game of the season. Wilfried Zaha's effort against Watford on Sunday has made him Crystal Palace's all-time highest goalscorer in the English Premier League. The Cote d’Ivoire international scored Palace's consolatory in their 2-1 loss to Watford and now has 24 English top-flight goals for the club, matching Chris Armstrong’s tally. In the Eagles' season-opening win over Fulham, the 25-year-old got one of the two winning goals to equal Armstrong's tally of 23 strikes, set 23 years ago [1995]. Last season, Zaha scored nine times in all competitions – his highest tally since he rejoined the club from Manchester United. This season, however, he has found the back of the net twice.
