Unai Emery criticism is a 'nonsense', according to Gary Neville

Unai Emery is already changing Arsenal's style, says Gary Neville
Unai Emery has been criticised for failing to make an impact at Arsenal after losing his first two games in charge, but Gary Neville explains why anyone who has not noticed the changes in the team’s approach has not been paying attention…
I have to say that one of the laziest things that I have heard over the last few days is that it is exactly the same as under Arsene Wenger. It is ridiculous to suggest that. People cannot be watching the same game.
The execution of the idea may not be there yet but if you look, first of all, at the defensive idea, which Unai Emery is obviously working on, I don't think I have seen for over ten years, probably since the days of Tony Adams, Martin Keown, Emmanuel Petit and Patrick Vieira, an Arsenal team from back to front so compact.
They are not always getting it right. In fact, they are quite often getting it wrong. But the idea that you can see the coaches working on is there.
OFF THE BALL
It is 25 to 30 metres from back to front. He has got them in a shape that I have not seen Arsenal be in too many times. The back line are trying to push up with the ball, which, again, I think Arsenal have been lazy at, and we have seen them continually shift the possession.
So for me, the idea of what the coach has been trying to work on is there. He is trying to undo quite a lot of the bad habits, to be quite honest with you, that have been going on for the last five or six years, that those players have had in them.
But the principle is there and that's a big change for me. It's a big step forward and if I were Unai Emery after these first two games against Manchester City and Chelsea I would be taking the positives. The way the back four is ending up with the rest of the team still a short distance away, for me, is a big success.
ON THE BALL
I have to say that last season this idea that Arsenal were always great under Arsene Wenger playing the ball out from the back was a nonsense. I thought they were hiding on the ball in midfield in the last two or three seasons. The combinations weren't there and the options weren't there.
Arsenal worked hard to provide passing options for their team-mates
When I think of the six versus four that Unai Emery has created in possession, they look to be in positions where, from the shape of the team, they can progress from. Forty-five seconds after the ball was at the goalkeeper's feet playing out from the back, they end up with the ball in the back of the Chelsea net.
I never saw Arsenal play out from the back like this last year in terms of having the options there. They are getting caught on occasions and the execution is wrong but to say that the idea is not there or it is the same as last year is an absolute nonsense and it is disrespectful.
Aston Villa have appointed Dean Smith as their new head coach, with former England and Chelsea captain John Terry as his assistant. Smith – a lifelong Villa supporter – joins from Championship rivals Brentford and replaces Steve Bruce, who was dismissed on October 3 after a run of one win in nine games left them in the bottom half of the table. Terry, who announced his retirement from playing on Sunday, spent last season with Villa, who have also announced Jesus Garcia Pitarch as their new sporting director. Pitarch has previously been director of football at Valencia and Atletico Madrid in his native Spain. Villa's CEO Christian Purslow said: "These three appointments represent the start of a new era and direction at Aston Villa and we are delighted to secure their services after an extensive search. "Dean has a clear and successful coaching philosophy as well as a real understanding of Aston Villa. He is also knowledgeable about the Championship. We...
Friday's Ligue 1 success set a club record for the former Dortmund boss, who is off to a flying start in Paris Thomas Tuchel has set a new Paris Saint-Germain record after winning each of his first six competitive matches in charge. PSG beat Saint-Etienne 4-0 at the Parc des Princes on Friday to extend a perfect start to the 2018-19 Ligue 1 season under their new head coach. Neymar was rested for the game and Kylian Mbappe was suspended but goals from Julian Draxler, Edinson Cavani, Angel Di Maria and Moussa Diaby earned a comfortable victory. PSG's latest win adds to Ligue 1 successes collected against Caen, Guingamp, Angers and Nimes, as well as a 4-0 demolition of Monaco in the Trophee des Champions. Tuchel's men move six points clear of nearest rivals Dijon ahead of Tuesday's trip to Liverpool in their first Champions League match under the German's stewardship. Carlo Ancelotti previously held the record for most successive wins at the start of his...
The French winger has been linked with a move away from Camp Nou, but showed what he was capable of with the only goal against Valladolid. Barcelona struggled immensely to implement their passing game under the bright lights and newly-laid turf at Real Valladolid's Estadio Jose Zorrilla, with Ousmane Dembele scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win to help strengthen his position at the club with the transfer deadline looming. Voicing his concerns prior to kick off on the playing surface, Barcelona manager Ernesto Valderde's worst fears were realised, with a plethora of divots, rough spots and craters quickly opening up. The pitch consequently served as an early leveler for the plucky Blanquivioletas, who took advantage of many uncharacteristic errors from the likes of Lionel Messi, Philippe Coutinho and Dembele to hit the Catalans on the counter early on. Dembele, in particular, was enduring a torrid time early on, as he lost possession a staggering 16 times in the first hal...
